1. Allergies
Using hair colors can cause allergic reactions in some people. For example, people who are allergic to gluten should be careful while using hair dyes since some of them contain gluten. It is not necessary that gluten-related allergies can occur only if you ingest it. Even if your skin comes in contact with gluten, it can result in allergic reactions. Also, it is not mandatory for the symptoms to appear immediately. They may appear after couple of hours or even after a day.(1)

Some of the symptoms of skin irritation are itching, redness, burning sensation, sores, discomfort, etc. One of the ways to avoid these symptoms is to do a patch-test before actually using the product. You can prepare a small mixture and apply it on the skin and wait for 48 hours to see if you are developing any rashes or itching sensation. Your skin is made of keratinized protein because of which discoloration can occur on the slips, drips and extra hair tint around the hairline. This is the reason why people are advised to wear gloves while applying the hair color because our fingernails are also made of the same keratinized protein.

4. Dry And Brittle Hair

The main reason behind this is the amount of chemicals(4) present in the hair coloring products. These chemicals are responsible for the lack of moisture and separating cuticle scales, leaving your hair dull and damaged. And the only way to deal with that damage is to go for a hair cut.

5. Asthma
Asthma is one of the serious side effects of using hair colors. There are a number of studies which have proved that there is a risk of development of asthma in people who are prone to lung inflammation. Presulfates are chemicals that are usually present in hair coloring products. The inhalation of this chemical is one of the reasons for an asthma attack along with other problems like wheezing, throat infection, persistent cough, etc. Another reason which can lead to an asthma attack is the presence of ammonia in the product.(4)

As per the National Cancer Institute, a regular use of hair coloring products is one of the reasons for almost 30% of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma cases. 8. Multiple Myeloma
Multiple myeloma is a form bone marrow cancer and people especially men who use hair dye to cover up their grey hairs on a regular basis are at a risk of developing this cancer. So men need to be careful and go easy on their hair dyes.(7)
9. PPD Induced Cancer
The chemical PPD present in hair dyes is also known to be associated with increasing the risk of development of cancer. However not directly associated, a longer exposure to the chemical present in the hair dye can lead to an increase the risk of cancer.(8)
10. Conjunctivitis
