Bruises and scrapes have been a part of everyone’s childhood. Getting them while playing and monkeying around was not uncommon. And, as we grow, scrapped knees while riding a bike become a staple. No wonder these sweet memories of childhood engrave in mind forever.

No matter how cool we felt during youth showing off our scrapped knees and bruises, it’s high time to know some effective ways to treat them. Even though bruises heal over time, they may get an infection when left untreated.

When you get a bruise, the skin tears, and you get exposed to various germs and microbes. It may lead to infections. Although various medications are available to treat bruises and infections, certain home remedies work wonders and ensure faster healing.

Before discussing one of the best home remedies, it is important to know what exactly a bruise is.

What Is A Bruise?

A bruise is a blemish on the skin due to a sudden impact. It is also called contusion or ecchymosis.

A bruise occurs when small veins under the skin burst as a result of acute pressure. It results in the development of blood clots that causes skin discoloration.

The color of a bruise changes from red, brown, blue, or black, depending upon the severity of pressure or impact. Accidents, trauma, certain medical condition, and physical abuse are some reasons for getting bruises.

Toothpaste For Bruises

Toothpaste proves to be a quick fix and an effective home remedy for bruises, for good reasons!

When the skin experiences damage in any form- cuts, injuries, or bruises- the subcutaneous layer gets hurt first. In some cases, the blood flows out; in others, it clots and gets collected under the skin.

The three types of bruises are

  • Subcutaneous bruises- Occurs just beneath the skin.
  • Intramuscular bruises- Occurs underlying muscles.
  • Periosteal bruises- Occurs on the bones.

While medical intervention is needed to treat intramuscular and periosteal bruises, subcutaneous bruises can be managed through home remedies like toothpaste.

Toothpaste consists of methanol as an active ingredient. It provides a cooling sensation and minty odor and taste.

Methanol consists of analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. Applying it over the bruised areas helps reduce the swelling and relieve the pain.

At the same time, toothpaste is believed to increase blood flow when rubbed gently over bruised areas. It accelerates healing and is thus one of the best home remedies to fix bruises.

Besides methanol, some toothpaste also contains clove oil, tea tree oil, coconut oil, and other essential oils as natural ingredients. Since these essential oils have therapeutic properties, they not only prove beneficial for teeth but also for bruises.

However, minty white toothpaste is considered the best to cure bruises due to methanol as an active ingredient.

How To Use Toothpaste For Bruises

You can use toothpaste in different ways to reduce swelling and alleviate pain due to bruises.

1. Using A Mint Toothpaste

For this method, you would require mint toothpaste and a bandage.

  • Take a small amount of toothpaste and apply it all over the bruised areas.
  • Cover the areas with a bandage so that toothpaste stays for a long.
  • Leave it overnight and wash it off in the morning.

Repeat this every night for at least three to four days to see the results. It will reduce the swelling and correct the color.

2. Using A Brushing Technique

This method requires a toothbrush with soft bristles, mint toothpaste, and a bandage.

  • Take a good amount of mint toothpaste and apply it over the bruised areas.
  • With the help of a toothbrush, massage gently over the bruise in a circular motion for at least five to six minutes.
  • Cover the area with a bandage and leave it overnight.

Massaging the affected area daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush will help fade the bruise quickly. Also, the methanol content will provide a soothing and relaxing effect.

3. Using A DIY lotion

The major ingredients for preparing this DIY lotion include toothpaste, moisturizing or sunscreen lotion, and coconut oil. Also, keep a bandage handy.

  • Mix one tablespoon of toothpaste with half a tablespoon of moisturizer or sunscreen and a few drops of coconut oil.
  • Blend them well and apply over the bruised areas.
  • Massage gently for 2 minutes and cover with the bandage.
  • Leave it overnight and wash it off the next morning.

Massaging the bruised areas with toothpaste delivers the benefits of methanol to the skin. At the same time, coconut oil has skin-nourishing and anti-inflammatory properties that will reduce swelling.

Furthermore, a gentle massage will improve blood flow and break the blood clots

Final Words

If you have accidentally hurt yourself at home and got bruises and going to the hospital seems daunting, using toothpaste as a home remedy is a good option. Sometimes the bruises are not severe enough to consult a doctor. In all such cases, toothpaste comes to the rescue.

The topical application of toothpaste can help get rid of bruises. However, it is important that you use only minty toothpaste and repeat the process daily to heal faster.  If you experience skin irritation or burning sensation, consult your doctor immediately.
